Moving Furniture Safely To Avoid Injuries And Avoid Damaging Your Home
Posted on 16/02/2016
The hardest part of moving house is moving furniture. It’s easy enough to carry and load boxes into the removal van but moving your heavy, bulky furniture is plain hard work and not in the least bit easy. And if you have obstacles like narrow hallways and doors in your way, it can make furniture removals even more difficult and as a result, stressful. Plus, you can cause yourself an injury if you do it incorrectly. And to put the icing on the cake, you could even end up causing damage to your home if you aren’t careful. It’s all very stressful. There is a way you can ease that stress. These simple tips are here to help you make it easier and hassle-free.
1. The right method to avoid injuries
If you have heavy, bulky furniture, you need to know exactly how to lift it and move it so that you don’t hurt yourself. It’s very easy to cause yourself an injury through doing it. Knowing how to do it properly is vital. So, first of all, remember to bend your knees when you start the lifting. If your legs are straight when you lift heavy furniture, you could cause yourself a back injury because you’ll be putting a lot of strain on your back.
2. Friends and family
If you are not using a professional company with movers to help you, make sure you ask friends and family for help with lifting. The more hands, the better. Trying to lift heavy furniture single handedly is a definite route to an injury. So politely ask friends or relatives for help. It should only take about an hour and you could help them in return with something or buy them something.
3. Measure door frames
Before carrying furniture and loading it into the removal van for your relocation, remember to measure your door frames to ensure your furniture can get through them. Measure each door frame and for the more awkward shaped furniture pieces, use the measurements to figure out a way to get the furniture through on a certain angle so it will fit through. This will save you lots of time.
4. Disassemble – if you can
A lot of furniture can be disassembled. If it can be disassembled, make sure you do it! Otherwise, you’ll be carrying a lot of heavy furniture without really needing to. Taking apart furniture is a much easier way to move it and far less demanding on your body. Some things can’t be taken apart completely but even if you do minor things like taking the legs off chairs and tables or taking the doors off cupboards, it takes a lot of the weight off and makes it easier for you. Just make sure all the bits and pieces are organized so you can put everything back together again.
5. Empty cupboards and cabinets
Don’t leave anything in your cupboards, cabinets, drawers or anything else that stores things. If you leave furniture full, it will add to the weight of the furniture, making it harder to move. Plus, there’s a high possibility the items will get broken if you leave them in.
6. Wrap furniture in protecting wrapping
Make sure you buy some professional packing materials so that you can cover your furniture with it so that it doesn’t get scratched when you move it. Furniture can easily get scratched against a wall or dropped so for that reason, you should invest in packing material in which to cover furniture before lifting and loading it.
