Moving to Plaistow - What Should You Know

Situated in the north-eastern part of the City, Plaistow is one of London’s hidden gems. With the large neighbouring areas of Stratford and West Ham, the district is away from the spotlight and is mostly dominated by large social housing estates. Although once considered a rundown area, Plaistow has benefited from a lot of regeneration in recent years and is defiantly a place to watch out for.

Location

The district is part of the London Borough of Newham, and near Green Street and West Ham. Plaistow comprises most of the E13 postcode area in London and contains several council estates. A number of main roads pass through the area including A112, Prince Regent Lane (High Street, The Broadway) and the A124, also known as the Barking Road. The area is home to the Boleyn Ground or Upton Park, which is the former home playground of West Ham F.C.

History

It is believed that the name of the suburb derives from Sir Hugh de Plaitz. In 1065, he married Phillippa de Mountifitchet, of the Mountifitchet Castle family, who at that time owned the area. It is she who named the location the Manor of Plaitz. The inner East London area was known for its crime history and was related to the legend of the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. Plaistow was heavily damaged during the Blitz.

Present Days

From being a place with notorious reputation, Plaistow has become a relatively quiet suburb with predominantly residential character. The area was part of a government programme designed to improve community safety, educational attainment and unemployment in places of severe need. As one of the 2012 Olympics areas, the district has received a sufficient economic boost. In addition, Plaistow has also received a number of lottery grants. One of the largest redevelopments includes the Memorial Community Church in Barking Road. Plaistow South was one of the fifty areas in the UK to receive a share from a Big Lottery Scheme grant in 2012 and it was awarded £1M to invest in locally-designed projects to improve the district. Since Plaistow is mostly comprised of houses and blocks of flats, large shopping centres, restaurants and other amenities can be found in the nearby areas of West Ham, Green Street and Stratford. Although Plaistow is an urban area, Upton Village provides residents and visitors with wonderful private gardens, shared residents’ courtyards and leafy open spaces. There are a number of recreation grounds in the suburb such as Plaistow Park and the Balaam Leisure Centre, making the area an attractive relocation destination.

Transport

Plaistow is well connected and has stations on both the District and the Hammersmith & City lines, enabling getting to the city centre quickly. For example, the travel time from and to Tower Hill is less than 20 minutes.
